Miller Canfield Opens Office in Toronto; Aids Global Expansion

April 1, 2008

The law firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, LLP announced today that it has opened an office in downtown Toronto and expanded its presence in Canada.

Miller Canfield was the first Michigan-based law firm to open an office in Canada in 2002 when it merged with Windsor, Ontario’s largest firm, Wilson Walker Hochberg Slopen LLP.

“Our expansion into the heart of the economic center of Canada allows us to continue to provide seamless cross-border legal representation to clients interested in doing business in North America,” said Michael W. Hartmann, CEO of Miller Canfield. The firm provides legal services to foreign and multinational companies, banks, and other clients whose business affairs are tied to the increasingly interdependent world economy.

According to the U.S. Department of State, the relationship between the U.S. and Canada is the closest and most extensive in the world—evidenced by the volume of bilateral trade—the equivalent of $1.5 billion a day in goods. Since Canada is the largest export market for most states, the U.S.-Canada border is extremely important. The two-way trade that crosses between Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario equals all U.S. exports to Japan.

The new office will be located on Bay Street in the Brookfield Place TD Canada Trust Tower in downtown Toronto and will serve Miller Canfield’s clients in a number of sectors including banking and finance, life sciences, and automotive and non-automotive manufacturing, and will expand the firm’s services in bankruptcy and insolvency, intellectual property, and corporate and securities including cross-border mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and foreign direct investment.

One of the U.S.’s oldest and largest firms with 379 lawyers, Miller Canfield has progressively accelerated its strategic growth plan. The firm opened international offices in Eastern Europe in the early 1990s and in Canada in 2002. In 2007, the firm opened offices in Chicago, Illinois and Cambridge, Massachusetts, and in March 2008, Miller Canfield filed an application to open an office in Shanghai, China. Other offices are located in Florida and

New York.

The new Miller Canfield Toronto office address is:
Brookfield Place, TD Canada Trust Tower
161 Bay Street, 27th Floor
Toronto, ON M5J 2S1

Miller Canfield was established in Detroit, Michigan in 1852 and currently employs 800 in offices in Michigan, Illinois, Massachusetts, Florida, New York, Canada and Poland.
