Phillip Shane is a principal at Miller Canfield and a member of the Firm's Litigation and Dispute Resolution group. He provides clients with legal and practical advice and support on a wide range of issues.

In the automotive sector, Phil advises vehicle manufacturers and suppliers about automotive product liability matters, regulatory investigations and compliance procedures involving the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act reporting. He coordinates nationwide discovery efforts in cases involving design and manufacturing defect allegations, as well as other tort claims. Phil also has experience helping clients navigate compliance with government consent orders and deal with oversight from government-appointed independent monitors.

Phil has a wealth of diverse experience in other areas, including complex commercial litigation, antitrust litigation and pre-merger investigations, regulatory matters, intellectual property disputes, labor and employment actions, and internal investigations and white-collar criminal defense.

Phil is also a leader in the eDiscovery and legal technology arena, assisting clients on a wide range of issues associated with identification, preservation, collection, review and analysis, production, and governance of electronically stored information (ESI). He draws on his experiences and intuition, using technology-assisted review (TAR) tools to analyze clients' data, identify important information, and arm his clients and colleagues with valuable insights. Phil also stays informed about the ever-evolving federal and state rules and requirements for eDiscovery, and he frequently negotiates ESI protocols and handles eDiscovery-related motions. Phil has been a member of The Sedona Conference Working Groups on Electronic Document Retention and Production and Data Security and Privacy Liability. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Detroit Chapter of the Association of Certified eDiscovery Specialists (ACEDS) and holds the CEDS certificate.

Phil has been recognized as a Michigan Super Lawyers "Rising Star" and a "Top Lawyer" by DBusiness Magazine.
