As Chief Executive Officer of Miller Canfield Consulting, Steve Arwood focuses on bringing together the private and public sectors to create successful economic development projects, provides advisory services and uses his expertise to develop economic strategies, in partnership with the legal professionals at Miller Canfield. 

Steve has more than 30 years of private- and public-sector experience. He served as the Chief Executive Officer for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, where he was responsible for the economic and business development efforts for the State of Michigan. He coordinated business and community development incentives and was responsible for bringing billions of dollars of investment to Michigan. He also oversaw the Pure Michigan brand and served as primary officer of the state's public/private "investment" fund, which manages over $350 million in assets. 

Steve has created or led some of the most important economic and regulatory agencies in the State of Michigan, helping to modernize their regulatory functions and update internal policies to streamline efficiency. He is responsible for creating the development and investment strategies for the top agencies in Michigan since 2012. Steve was a primary decision maker in the plan to attract and develop the autonomous and connected vehicles industry in the state during the last few years. 

In addition to years of public service, Steve served as a senior executive for several private financing and development companies.

Representative Matters

Steve Arwood has served in a variety of key governmental roles related to economic and community development. He has managed several of Michigan's most important and successful economic initiatives. Some of his most recent work has included the following:

  • President and Chief Executive Office of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and President and Chairman of the Michigan Strategic Fund: Steve served as a liaison to the Governor and a member of the Governor's Cabinet in order to coordinate, negotiate and develop all business and community development incentives and oversee the Pure Michigan brand management. Steve also oversaw the state's "investment" bank and managed an overall yearly budget in excess of $500 million. 
  • Director of the Michigan Department of Talent and Economic Development: Steve served as the start-up director for this group, which includes the MEDC, the Michigan State Housing and Development Authority (MSHDA) and the Michigan Talent Investment Agency (TIA). While serving in this role, Steve also served as Chairman of the MSHDA Board of Directors and Chairman of the Michigan Land Bank. 
  • Director of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs: This position was by appointment of Governor Rick Synder and is the state's unified regulatory agency. During this time, Steve also as the state's Chief Regulatory Officer and Executive Order Authority over rulemaking processes.
  • Director of the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency: Steve completed a total overhaul of internal functions, including the largest revision of the Michigan Employment Security Act in 75 years and a complete replacement of the outdated computer systems.
