Miller Canfield attorneys serve the complex legal needs and business objectives of domestic business entities and foreign multinational companies whose commerce, profits and growth are connected to the increasingly interdependent and expanding world economy. Our attorneys have been a presence in international business and trade law for decades, and are called upon to assist foreign consulates and trade offices, state agencies and local governmental units with matters involving international law.

Just like our clients, we have diverse backgrounds and experience in international legal and business matters. Some of our attorneys have served as general counsel for major U.S. multinational corporations and their experience covers the full range of legal issues facing a multinational company. Members of the group have negotiated and drafted international licensing, sales, and distributorship agreements since the early 1950s. Today, we represent multinational companies in general business affairs from our North American, European and Asian offices.

We advise and assist clients in international arbitration, foreign expropriations, export licensing, compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and all other legal issues affecting companies wishing to do business in the U.S. and around the world.

With the increase in global trade, Miller Canfield's representation of companies from Europe, Japan, Canada, Latin America, and the Middle East has expanded. The firm represents a large number of companies that have subsidiaries in the U.S. or that otherwise transact business in the U.S. And, clients rely on our experience in organizing U.S. subsidiaries for foreign companies, and retain our attorneys for additional guidance and counsel for compliance with federal reporting requirements and antitrust considerations, environmental matters, employment law considerations and the protection of intellectual property assets.

In international banking and finance, our experience serves clients well in assisting with the establishment of foreign agencies and representative offices, bank formation and the acquisition of bank holding companies. We work closely with clients in matters regarding commercial lending and leveraged leasing, real estate development, bankers' acceptances, issuance of letters of credit, and other credit enhancements as they acclimate to a new business environment. Our attorneys represent numerous local and money-center financial institutions and recently, in connection with a large financing for the state of Michigan, the firm acted as counsel to a consortium of leading Japanese banks.

As a further reflection of our continuing presence in international law and global business, Miller Canfield attorneys are members and active participants in the numerous business, professional, governmental, and civic organizations which are dedicated to international affairs-–and one Miller Canfield lawyer is the past chairman of the State Bar of Michigan International Law Section. We are proficient in many languages and work with local counsel throughout the United States and in many foreign countries where assistance in matters of local law is required.
