Consumer Product Safety + Regulation

The Miller Canfield Consumer Product Safety Team specializes in representing manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers of consumer products impacted by complex regulations.  From the design of product literature and warnings, to the investigation of product defect issues and the implementation of recalls, to representation before the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) – we have decades of product liability and regulatory compliance experience to provide the assistance needed in today’s global environment.

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) passed in 2008, affects both manufacturers of toys and the children who play with them.  These sweeping new rules must be understood and adopted by everyone - from the largest global manufacturer to the crafter working in the family workshop -  to the retail shop on the corner.  Even those who make and donate products to hospitals and charities, are affected.  Indeed, all children’s products including toys, books, child care articles and clothing are covered in different ways by this law, and there are different rules for different products.

We stay on top of the changes while anticipating what’s ahead.  We work with clients to develop cost-effective compliance strategies.  We identify issues and provide guidance regarding risk management programs and product regulations at both the state and federal levels.  We have experience working with manufacturers and importers large and small.
