Update For ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization)

January 28, 2009

All individuals traveling to the United States for business or pleasure under the Visa Waiver Program must now obtain a travel authorization from the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to their trip.  ESTA is accessible at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov.  Each traveler must register (meaning adults and children), and will have to provide basic biographical data, passport information, and will have to answer questions regarding their visit to the United States.  It is recommended that individuals register their trip with ESTA as soon as travel plans are arranged.  Individuals should not wait until the last minute, unless there is an emergency.  The travel authorization through ESTA is generally valid for two years, or until the individual's passport expires, whichever comes first.  Generally, a visitor may travel to the US repeatedly within the validity period of the travel authorization without having to apply for another ESTA.  Currently, there is no fee for this travel authorization.  The current Visa Waiver Program countries include:  Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Republic of Korea, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
