Customers' Account Information Stolen by Bank Employees

June 15, 2005

Four major banks, including Bank of America and Wachovia, recently experienced what is believed to be the largest theft of customer account information. The number of accounts affected by the theft currently stands at 676,000, but according to the Hackensack, New Jersey police, that number may ultimately be over one million. The information, consisting of customer account numbers and balances, was sold by bank employees to a man who then sold the information to collection agencies. The banks are notifying the customers affected and offering free credit monitoring.
